Duris L. Holmes represents clients in arbitration, litigation and transactional matters involving intellectual property and corporate issues. Duris also represents clients in the areas of creditors’ rights, professional liability, employment and education law, and he represents franchisors with respect to disclosure, relationship and termination issues.
Duris joined Deutsch Kerrigan as a law clerk in 1985 and became an associate upon passing the bar in 1986. As a result, he has been with the firm his entire 38-year legal career. One of his most well-known cases is Board of Supervisors of the Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College et al. v. Smack Apparel Company et al., which was a trademark dispute involving six well-known universities’ unregistered color schemes. Duris represented the defendant in the damages portion of the case after liability had been determined and succeeded in reducing the plaintiffs’ damages to less than 10 percent of the amount claimed.
Duris is an Eagle Scout and remains active in scouting, having previously served on the Executive Board of the Southeast Louisiana Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and serving as a Boy Scout leader. was a founding member of the board of Advocates for Academic Excellence in Education, Inc., which is the sponsoring organization for Benjamin Franklin High School, recognized as one of the top high schools in the United States, and served for over 10 years as board president.
In his free time, Duris enjoys spending time with his four children, reading, playing guitar and cooking.
